Dear Marie and Family, The news of Dick's passing has made this a sad day for all who knew him. Dick's genuine warmth and consideration for others marked him a special person who stood out in a most memorable way. The seven years we spent as neighbors in Stephenville will always be a treasure for me. The flood of memories I had today has left me with great sadness, but also gratitude for the friendship we shared. My thoughts are with you all. With love and respect, Peter.

On behalf of Jess, Evan, Andrew, and myself, our sincere condolences to the Marrie family. I met Dick Marrie 30 years ago while I was dating his eldest daughter Cathy whom I later married. Through all of the years there are many memories. I will always have fond memories of all the time I spent with Dick. The memories that stand out are our salmon fishing trips to Labrador and the south coast of Newfoundland, moose hunting in the wilderness of central Newfoundland, our trip around Cape Spear on the motor sail vessel Annaville in high seas, the many carpentry projects we worked on while he sang various songs. But the most memorable of all is, his presence and support at many family functions. I will always be grateful for his support to my family and me at the various times when my father and mother passed away. I wish you calm seas and fair winds on your journey Dick. God Bless you. I feel honored and blessed to have had him in my life, and will never forget him. You will be dearly missed old buddy. I wish I could be there to say goodbye to you in person. Rest in Peace. We are really saddened by the news of Dick's death. He and Marie became our friends in September 1970 when we arrived from Ireland to teach in Mount Carmel where Marie was already a much loved and respected teacher.Dick was so kind, generous and full of fun from the first time we met, that he lightened our homesick moments and gave us many treasured memories to take home to Ireland. He was always there to fix things - even before they were broken - shovel snow or chop wood for our stove. He managed to make us believe that he loved doing those jobs which most people would consider to be chores. He was a true craftsman when he undertook one of his many home projects and his beloved 'Shack' in Mount Carmel bears ample testament to his wonderful ability. We remained friends by letter and phone over the years and will always remember when Dick, Marie and their great friends Richard and Jean Hall broke off from their European tour to spend some time with us in Donegal.I can still hear his early morning rendition of Molly Malone - or Muscles and Cockles as Dick called it - as he smoked his first one of the day in the back garden. We later had a couple of wonderful visits with Dick and Marie in their home in St. Johns, where they were, as always, the perfect hosts: nobody will BBQ a steak like Dick as he refilled glasses and created a funfilled and homely atmosphere. We ate, we drank, we laughed and even cried a little. We met their children again , now all grown up and with partners and children. It was no surprise to see the joy his grandchildren gave him. Dick had always adored Marie and their children and Marie and ourselves often laughed heartily that year in Mount Carmel as we listened to Dick's attempts to be cross with them. We offer our condolences with love to Marie, the love of his life, Cathy, Pat,Lucy, Annette, Sandra,to their partners, Dick's grandchildren to Dick's sister Carmel and all the Marrie family. To Mrs. Marrie, Jessica, Evan and Andrew Puddister, and the Marrie family: We wish to offer you condolences on your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Mr. Marrie was a vibrant individual with a very warm smile and a twinkle in his eye. I would like to remark on his kindness, affection and most of all, his respect for my mother, Mrs. Margaret Puddister, particularly after the death of my father, Captain J. Frank Puddister. She appreciated Mr. Marrie so much that she made him a cherry cake every Christmas and I know he was delighted and grateful to receive it. That was just one quiet and admirable aspect of his personality, how he could make someone feel appreciated and valued. So, to Mr. Marrie, thank you for making my mother feel useful and valued in her twilight years. I will have a mass said here in Scotland for the repose of his soul. Kindest regards, Aunt Carol (Puddister) and Uncle Bob Nicol, and Sarah Peddigrew, Aberdeen, Scotland and Michael Peddigrew, St. John’s.
