He will always be remembered from his extraordinary performances in Trinity. He could indeed bring you to tears or laughter. Before his illness he was an interesting man to have a conversation with - whether he agreed with you or not. This feels like the end of an era. May his soul rest in peace.

Condolences Marie on the passing of your brother John .
Since I heard the news all I can think about are the early days of our teaching careers when John, Anita and I were exiled to the boonies and drove to Holyrood together on many weekends. Anita’s wicked driving and John declaiming poetry. Great singalongs. So sad to have lost them both much too soon but such great memories. Condolences to all of you from Sharon and Ted. Hope we can get together soon and remember him properly.
To the Ryan and Hunt families, it saddens me to learn that John has left us. I remember being so utterly impressed by his natural gift for acting and his power of possesssion over an audience. Now the curtain is drawn on Act 111 so may John rest in perfect peace and be rejoined with Anita.
So sorry to hear. John was a brilliant and talented man

Deeply saddened to hear of John’s passing. I first met him and Anita when he was writing for the Newfoundland Herald and I was just starting a musical career. He was a great supporter of and advocate for all Newfoundland artists, with whom I had the pleasure of working on several of Rising Tide’s Revues. He was hard-working, cheerful, and devoted to stage craft, never happier, it seemed, than at the end of a successful show and graciously accepting applause from an appreciative audience. Sincere condolences to the family, and I’m doubly sorry not to be able to pay my respects in person at his service. Rest in peace, John, and I’ll always remember you, especially when I’m “out on the water”.

Dear Marie, Brendan, The Ryan and Hunt families and John's friends. I want to let you know I was one of the lucky ones to see John Ryan perform on stage and watch him in Trinity. When I saw his picture I was immediately brought back to Trinity. John was gifted. I always felt that John wasn't performing or acting; he was living the part. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Sincerely, Gladys

His mighty strength and was always on evidence.John's joy of life was immense. We are preparing our 42 years of Rising Tide for the archives this summer and yesterday morning he pulled a photo out of a box and it was John in the Pageant. We are saddened to hear of John’s passing, but will always remember him fondly from our time at school together ‘on the ridge’, ‘down the harbour’, and then on to high school in Avondale. Over the years, since then, during our regular visits back to Colliers, it was always a pleasure to stop by to have a ‘chat’ with John and Anita. In recent years, we still enjoyed the opportunity to stop and chat with John, whether it was on the church steps after mass in Colliers, or at the folk fest on Colliers ball field.... Marie and Family, please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories of John to forever hold in your hearts.
It's a sad but inevitable experience to hear of an old friend's passing. I was a "trouper" with John on a few stages especially at the summer plays in Trinity and I've also been in the audience as he performed. I especially remember his performance in the two-person play "Sea Marks." Several summers I shared a house with John and Ed Keilly while we three were performers at the Trinity summer theatre festival. Long may your big jib draw John.
It was definitely a shock to hear of John's passing. As was said in his obituary, John could bring tears and laughter to many of his friends and family. During our university years, he brought many sessions of laughter to me and later I experienced many more emotions when he put on those excellent performances on stage. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to all his family.
Marie, Brendan & family So sorry to hear about John. A very bright light extinguished much too soon!

Marie, Brendan and Family - Our sincere sympathy on John’s passing. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Marie & Brian Hurley
Marie and Jim and families my deepest condolences on John’s passing. We shared a childhood in Colliers and later developed a passion for theatre and books. I regret we never fulfilled our plan to act together. John was a man filled with a love of life and a zest for living. His voice will always be in my head.
Marie, Family & Friends I meet John in 1970 when Anita & I shared an apartment in St. John's. She was going to MUN and I was working at the Arts and Cultural Center. John was always a very interesting and special person. He had such a easy way about himself. John always had an opinion to share on any and all subjects. We had the privilege of attend a few on the plays with John and Anita. They always give an excellent performance. We saw John and Anita the day before she passed. We had just arrived for our daughter's graduation from MUN and we drove out to see Anita. Spending over 3 hrs with them both reminiscing about the past; they were true soul mates. So very sorry to hear of John's passing. Sending heartfelt sympathy to you all. Keep you in thought and prayer. Sincerely
John & Madonna (Lewis) Mortensen
