Dr. Rama Balan

It is with considerable sadness we announce the passing of our dad, Dr. Rama Balan, January 15, 2024.

Dad is survived by his three children: Ben (Lorri), Minnie-Anne and Nathan (Laurie); our mom, Effie (Jim White) and all of our children (Jacob, Aidan, Issac, Cameron, Kay, Anna, Nate and India); and special sister, our Aunt Raji. 

Dad was born in Bombay, India April 15, 1948. At the age of 20, he moved to NL, Canada with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemistry.  He then completed a second Masters Degree in BioChemistry and his fourth and final degree in Medicine. He began his career as a family physician in Bay Roberts and later continued his practice in the communities of Bay L'Argent, Grand le Pierre, Terrenceville, Colliers and Harbour Main.

Following a tragic car accident Dad's health deteriorated and he lived his final years in India. Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of his life will occur at a later date. 

On a personal note, Dad modelled how to be of service while he walked this earth. It wasn't uncommon to see our dad leave a delicious steak dinner on the table or get out of bed in the middle of the night when a patient arrived unannounced. It was a regular practice for our dad to invite someone less fortunate or without family to dinner. He taught us the importance of an apology, how to build lasting friendships and to love people as your family, biological or not.

In Dad's memory, please buy dinner for someone who's less fortunate, who may be physically or mentally unwell, or simply have a conversation with someone you see needing compassion. 

Thank you for loving all of us, Dad. Your love will forever live within our hearts and those you touched with your kindness.
